TBC – August
Organisation Details
Swarthmore Education Centre is a long-standing Leeds charity dedicated to lifelong learning and social inclusion. They support adults, families, and individuals who may feel uncomfortable in formal education by providing a friendly, human-scale environment for personal growth. Through a diverse range of creative courses, essential skills training, and community projects, they empower people to build confidence and overcome barriers. By offering on-site childcare and a student hardship fund, they ensure accessible opportunities for those with limited means.
Project Details
This expansive centre has several key areas that require internal decoration to remain welcoming for students and visitors. Your task will be to repaint these spaces, freshening them up to bring a new lease of life to the learning environment;
- Art Studio
- 9x classrooms
- Activity Hall
- Corridors
- Toilets
All the above spaces will follow the same process; Prepare surfaces > First coat (Acrylic Durable Matt) > Second Coat (Acrylic Durable Matt)
There are also some outdoor spaces that need a general clean up.
Dates & Volunteer Number
Given the setting, this project is only available to take place in August 2026. We can accomodate teams from 5-20 volunteers.
On-site support
On the day Participate will be providing a member of staff to support the volunteers. A trained first aider and first aid kit will be available during the challenge. A tools talk and health and safety briefing will be given by Participate at the beginning of the day. We will also share with you our completed Risk Assessment for your own records.
Preparation
Volunteers will be undertaking painting activities and are required to wear old and reasonably robust clothing that you will not mind getting paint on. We do offer paint
overalls, although these do not guarantee no damage to clothing. We also require sensible sturdy footwear, avoiding heels and open toe footwear. Where personal protective equipment is required, it will be provided.
Materials, tools and equipment
Tools and materials will be provided by Participate Projects.
