Organisation Details

Thornhill Junior and Infant Primary School is located within one of the 20% most deprived areas in England, supporting 380 children across 14 classes. The school is eager to engage with Yorkshire Water Contract Partners who can provide volunteer support for a series of essential improvements to their outdoor learning and play spaces. The primary goal is to remove dilapidated structures and replace them with safe, functional resources that will enhance the children’s outdoor experience.

Scope of Works

Removal & Demolition:*

  • Dismantle and remove old Wendy House.
  • Dismantle and clear the existing mud pit.
  • Dismantle and dispose of the rotten mud kitchen.
  • Dismantle and remove rotten raised beds and benches.

Construction & Improvements:*

  • Build & Install: Construct a new mud kitchen and dedicated storage for equipment. Construct small benches.
  • Maintenance: De-weed and repaint the “Minibeast” learning area.
  • Restoration: Paint existing timber and metal play structures to extend their lifespan.
  • Groundworks: Lay new woodchip flooring in designated play areas.

Number of volunteers

This project can accommodate teams between 10-15 volunteers. Tasks will be allocated based on size of team.

On-site support

On the day Participate will be providing a member of staff to support the volunteers. A trained first aider and first aid kit will be available during the challenge. A tools talk and health and safety briefing will be given by Participate at the beginning of the day. We will also share with you our completed Risk Assessment for your own records.

Preparation

Volunteers will be undertaking general construction and painting activities. Volunteers should pay particular attention to footwear wearing sturdy, comfortable footwear. Do not wear flip flops, Crocs or any other open footwear. Where personal protective equipment is required, it will be provided. Activities are taking place outdoors and as such the volunteers should be prepared for inclement weather or sunshine.
